7 Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign

Most outdated websites do not look obviously broken. They look fine to the person who owns them, because that person has seen the site a hundred times and knows where everything is.

Your customers do not. Here are seven signs, in rough order of how much they cost you, that your website needs rebuilding rather than tinkering with.

1. It is awkward on a phone

Open your website on your own phone. Do you have to pinch and zoom? Does the menu overlap the logo? Do you have to scroll sideways to read a sentence? Is a button too small to tap with a thumb?

Most of your visitors are on a phone. If the experience annoys you, the person deciding between you and a competitor does not persevere.

2. Nobody finds it on Google

Search your main service plus your city, in a private browsing window so your own history does not flatter the result. If you cannot find yourself within the first couple of pages, your website is effectively invisible to everyone who does not already know your name.

This is usually a foundation problem: no keyword research, missing page titles and descriptions, every service crammed onto one page. It is fixable, but it is rebuilding rather than decorating.

3. It is slow

Count the seconds from tapping your link to the page being readable. If it drags, you are losing visitors before they have seen anything at all, and search engines notice the same sluggishness.

The usual culprits are huge unoptimised photos, a pile of plugins or widgets nobody uses, and an old template.

4. You cannot update it yourself

If changing a price means emailing a developer and waiting three days, your website will drift out of date. Wrong prices and old opening hours do more damage than an unfashionable layout, because they actively mislead customers.

A modern site should let you change text, photos, prices and services yourself, without touching code.

5. It does not tell people what to do next

Look at your homepage as a stranger. Within three seconds, can you tell what the business does, who it is for, and how to take the next step?

Sites that fail this usually open with a slogan rather than an offer, hide the phone number in the footer, and never ask for the booking. Traffic arrives, reads, and leaves.

6. It looks dated next to your competitors

Open your site in one tab and your three closest competitors in the others. Customers effectively do this before choosing. Tiny text, stock photos of offices nobody works in, cluttered layouts and old-fashioned styling all quietly say “this business may not be around any more”.

Design is not vanity here. It is the first credibility test you pass or fail.

7. It cannot take bookings or inquiries properly

If the only way to reach you is a phone number, or a contact form you are not sure still works, your website is a leaflet. Send yourself a test message right now. It is surprisingly common for those emails to have silently stopped arriving.

Redesign, or start again?

A redesign makes sense when the content is solid and the structure works, and the site simply looks tired.

Rebuilding makes more sense when several of the signs above are true at once, especially invisibility on Google, because SEO problems usually live in the structure rather than the surface. Patching a site with weak foundations tends to cost more over time than replacing it.

What not to lose in the move

If your current site has been running a while, it may have value worth carrying over: pages that already rank, reviews and testimonials, photos of your actual work, and your existing page addresses, which should be redirected rather than abandoned.

We review what is working on your current site before rebuilding, so those things are not thrown away.

What a rebuild involves

For a small business, replacing an underperforming site with a complete Wix website, including design, SEO setup, booking and a dashboard, costs $500 to $1,000 and takes 10 to 20 days. Traffic and inquiries typically start improving within about four months of launch, because search engines take time to catch up.
